The Moment when the Canvas comes to Life: Interview with painter Hervé Lenouvel

    December 2, 2025

Renowned French contemporary artist Hervé Lenouvel believes artists play an important role not only in the present but also throughout history. Artists reflect the spirit of their time. They provoke thought, inspire emotion, and encourage creativity.

In addition, artists create connections between cultures and generations. Their work does more than decorate the world. It helps us understand the experiences, emotions, and stories that shape humanity.

East West Fine Art, a leading gallery in Naples for over 25 years, is honored to present Hervé Lenouvel’s paintings. Through his expressive use of color and texture, Hervé captures moments of beauty inspired by nature, light, and personal observation.

The gallery’s owner, Leeza Arkhangelskaya (LA), speaks with Hervé (HL) about his artistic journey, signature palette-knife technique, and the inspiration behind his coastal collection.

    Hervé Lenouvel’s Artistic Vision

From the beginning of his career, Hervé has remained committed to creating artwork that communicates emotion and sincerity. His goal is not only to paint but also to create pieces that connect with people on a personal level.

LA: What are your short and long-term goals for your art?

HL: I just want to keep painting and remain sincere in my expression. My wish is that my works continue to touch people, that they find their place in the lives of others and that they continue to convey emotions.

    Developing a Signature Palette-Knife Style

Over time, Hervé explored different artistic techniques before discovering the expressive freedom of the palette knife. As a result, this approach became an essential part of his unique artistic language.

LA: How did you develop your signature palette-knife style?

HL: It happened gradually. At first, I experimented with different techniques: watercolor, pastel, oil with a brush, then oil with a knife. I loved the freedom and energy it brought to the gesture, the texture of the material, and little by little, using the tool became instinctive.

    Finding Inspiration Along the Coast

Today, Hervé’s coastal paintings reflect his close connection with the natural world. The changing atmosphere of the sea, shifting colors, and movement of light continue to influence his creative process.

LA: What inspired this new coastal collection?

HL: I live very close to the coast, where you can admire vast expanses of sea. The changing light, the wind, the ever-shifting colors, and the boundary between sky and sea inspire me deeply. I wanted to capture this energy and serenity in my paintings.

The Creative Process Behind Hervé Lenouvel’s Paintings

For Hervé, inspiration comes from observing the world around him. Nature, water, light, and the sky all provide endless possibilities for artistic exploration.

Furthermore, his creative process remains focused on the experience of painting itself—the moment when an idea transforms into a finished work of art.

LA: How do you stay inspired and keep your artwork fresh?

HL: Inspiration is everywhere, you just have to stay alert and observe your surroundings, give way to curiosity, Nature, water, lights, the sky, anything can inspire the desire to paint. As for my recent paintings, I can let them go quickly because what fascinates me above all else is the act of painting, the moment when the canvas comes to life. Once the work is finished, my mind is already turning to the next one.
