In Art Placement – Size Does Matter

You may have just spent a small fortune on artwork and furnishings for your home. In fact, the price of your sofa alone could feed a small village for a year. The furniture placement is correct, yet something still feels visually off. The moment you walk into the room, you sense an imbalance—but you can’t quite identify the cause.
Seven out of ten times, the issue lies in the placement of the artwork. The most common culprit is size. The artwork is often either too large or too small for the designated wall space and is frequently hung too high or too low. This creates a visual imbalance that affects the entire room.
There is no need for embarrassment—you are in good company. Internationally known celebrities, politicians, diplomats, and authors make the same mistake in their homes. How do I know? With many interviews now conducted from home rather than in studios, audiences are given a glimpse into personal spaces. In many cases, the artwork displayed behind them is too small for the wall and positioned too high, disrupting the overall harmony of the room.
There are two simple solutions to this common problem. First, consider relocating artwork from another wall or room. This can be a cost-effective solution, provided it does not create imbalance elsewhere. Second, invest in artwork that is properly scaled to the dimensions of your wall. The piece should be proportionate to the space and positioned correctly, whether or not there is furniture beneath it.
With this one thoughtful adjustment, you can instantly create a room that feels balanced, cohesive, and elegant enhancing every other design element and eliminating the visual distraction that once disrupted the space.
